# AMD Acquires World Labs for $8.2 Billion to Accelerate Open AI Ecosystem Integration

On September 28, AMD announced a final agreement to acquire World Labs, an artificial intelligence company led by Fei-Fei Li. The all-stock transaction carries a valuation of $8.2 billion and anticipates completion by the end of 2026 following regulatory approvals. World Labs, founded in 2024 as a private entity based in San Francisco, specializes in spatial intelligence models capable of generating, reconstructing, and simulating three-dimensional environments from text, images, and videos. The company recently unveiled its Atlas spatial intelligence omnimodel, which reconstructs 3D spaces from limited image inputs. AMD had previously participated in a $1 billion funding round for World Labs in February.

AMD's leadership cited the transaction as a strategic move to address evolving computational demands in AI applications spanning inference, robotics, and physical AI. The company aims to integrate World Labs' advanced model development expertise into its infrastructure planning, enabling deeper insights into workload transformations to inform future technology roadmaps. Lisa Su, AMD's chairperson and chief executive officer, emphasized the necessity of understanding model evolution to construct next-generation AI computing platforms. She noted that Fei-Fei Li and the World Labs team would contribute exceptional research leadership and model specialization, which AMD would leverage to develop hardware, software, and systems supporting AI while strengthening open ecosystem initiatives.

Fei-Fei Li highlighted the importance of close collaboration between model research, system design, and computing infrastructure to advance next-generation AI technologies. She explained that joining AMD would provide access to expanded resources and engineering capabilities, enabling the team to define infrastructure critical for future AI applications. According to Li, AMD's CEO Su had been an early investor in World Labs, and a formal technical partnership initiated in 2025 focused on optimizing model training and inference using AMD GPUs. This collaboration naturally led to the decision to integrate software and hardware components with foundational models and applications to create a unified AI ecosystem.

Post-acquisition, Fei-Fei Li will assume the role of executive vice president and chief scientist at AMD, reporting directly to Su. Co-founders Justin Johnson and Ben Mildenhall will continue leading the World Labs team, which will transition into a research division within AMD. The team plans to maintain its focus on AI model development while expanding its work across hardware, software, platforms, and widely accessible open models to build end-to-end open AI ecosystems. Li described the new position as a culmination of her career trajectory, stating it would allow her to grow and lead cutting-edge research teams within major AI organizations.

The acquisition follows World Labs' prior $1 billion funding round in February, where AMD was already a participant. The transaction value remains fixed at $8.2 billion without currency conversion. No additional financial terms were disclosed beyond the stated amount. The company's spatial intelligence technologies will now operate under AMD's corporate structure, with the team retaining its research focus areas.
