# Einstein Hospital Israelita and Mayo Clinic Platform launch one-year program to accelerate health AI startups in South America

Einstein Hospital Israelita has announced a partnership with the Mayo Clinic Platform to accelerate artificial intelligence startups focused on healthcare in South America. The initiative, named the Healthcare Innovation Program, was presented during the Einstein Frontiers event, which discusses applications of AI and robotics in medicine. The program is expected to last approximately one year and will combine clinical and scientific knowledge, technological infrastructure, and strategic support for companies developing solutions for the health sector.

The initiative is directed at AI health startups and provides access to the technological infrastructure of the Mayo Clinic Platform for the development, training, and evaluation of models. The goal is to help companies mature their technologies and expand the possibilities for application in health systems. The first group of participants is in the final stage of selection, and new cohorts are expected to be opened later. Selected companies will also receive mentorship in business strategy, business development, fundraising, and regulatory issues. The program includes connections with professionals and institutions in the South American health and innovation ecosystem.

Einstein will evaluate participating companies through a process called the Strategic Snapshot. This report considers strategic, business, technical-scientific, regulatory, and intellectual property aspects. Based on this diagnosis, startups can identify challenges and opportunities to develop their products and business models. The partnership is part of a broader strategy by Einstein to bring together hospitals, researchers, companies, and entrepreneurs in the development of health solutions.

Rodrigo Demarch, the executive director of Innovation at Einstein, stated that the institution seeks to identify system problems before deciding which technologies should be developed or incorporated. He noted that while technology is important, it is necessary to develop solutions based on local needs. Understanding the context of a specific locality, such as Brazil or Latin America, is essential to create or adapt technologies that serve those delivering care. The innovation strategy involves different paths, including developing solutions internally, building them in partnership with a company, or acquiring them from third parties if a suitable technology already exists.

The development of health technologies requires validation stages before adoption in clinical practice. For tools that assist doctors in diagnoses or clinical decisions, it is necessary to produce scientific evidence demonstrating efficacy and safety. Depending on the application, obtaining registration with the National Health Surveillance Agency, known as Anvisa, may also be required. Demarch emphasized that understanding the problem with depth is the first step, as starting with a solution is often a mistake. The solution may not be technological, but rather a process change or service redesign.

The partnership with Mayo Clinic also aims to expand the reach of companies in Einstein's innovation ecosystem. According to Demarch, startups that have passed through the institution's structure have impacted approximately 65 million lives and contributed to the generation of roughly 2,000 to 2,500 jobs. Connecting these companies to an international platform may help bring their technologies to other markets and expand the reach of solutions developed in the region.
