# Google adds file editor to Gemini for free users

Google has introduced a new file editor to the Gemini application. This tool allows users to open and edit documents, PDF files, presentations, spreadsheets, and code generated by the artificial intelligence directly within the conversation, removing the need to download files or use separate software.

Announced on October 29, the feature is available to all users across all supported languages of the Gemini application. It does not require a paid subscription. Testing on November 1 confirmed the feature is active in the web version for free users.

When a user asks Gemini to create a file, a preview appears below the response. Users can click the text for manual editing, select specific parts for rewriting, or ask questions about the content. A full screen view button opens the file in a larger editing interface, and completed files can be exported or saved to Google Drive. These capabilities are available for free accounts, although Google reduced the available AI model options for this user category on October 9.

Functionality varies by platform. On Android and iOS applications, editing is limited to PDF files. Editing Google Docs, Google Sheets, presentations, Markdown, TXT files, and code requires the web version at gemini.google.com. The feature is intended for files created by Gemini and is not a full replacement for specialized PDF editing software such as Acrobat.

Google stated that information within these files is treated as part of Gemini conversations and follows the same privacy policies. The company warns users not to enter confidential information that they do not want reviewers to see or that they do not want used to improve company services and machine learning technologies. Conversations reviewed by humans may be kept for up to 3 years, even after activity history is deleted. Users are advised to avoid uploading bank documents, job applications, medical letters, or files with sensitive personal data.
