# Google restricts free access to AI models following Gemini 4 Argon launch

Google plans to limit free access to artificial intelligence models in its Gemini service, shortly after the launch of its new model, Gemini 4 Argon. Starting from October 9, 2026, free personal accounts not subscribed to Google AI plans will only have access to the Flash-Lite model.

According to an update published by Google in the support documents for its Gemini plans, users without a paid subscription will lose access to the Gemini Flash and Gemini Pro models, limiting their accounts to Flash-Lite. This represents a significant change in the level of free usage available.

Before this change, users without subscriptions could access Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro models. However, from October 9, free usage will be restricted to Flash-Lite only.

Subscribers to Google AI Plus will retain access to Flash-Lite and Flash but will lose access to the Pro model. Meanwhile, the Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra plans will maintain access to all three models.

Google clarifies that AI Plus subscribers will receive emails detailing when the changes will take effect on their accounts.

The update also introduces the Deep Think feature to the Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra plans, which was previously available only to Ultra subscribers. Google describes Deep Think as designed for achieving "maximum parallel reasoning," enabling the model to handle complex tasks with advanced reasoning capabilities.

This change follows the launch of Google Gemini 4 Argon, which aims to compete with the latest AI models, including GPT-6 Astra and Claude Opus 5.5, while the company continues to expand Gemini's use across its various applications and platforms. The new restrictions will come into effect on October 9, 2026, with ongoing variations in available features and models depending on the user’s subscription plan.
