# Google Restricts Gemini Model Access for Free and Plus Users

Google announced that users of its Gemini app and website who do not pay will soon be limited to a single AI model for conversations. The model will be the lowest‑performing one called Flash‑Lite. Free users will lose access to Flash and Pro models starting October 9. Subscribers to the cheapest paid plan, AI Plus at $4.99 per month (725 yen in Japan), will also be barred from Pro and can only use Flash or Flash‑Lite. This forces free users who need Flash to upgrade to AI Plus, and forces AI Plus users who need Pro to upgrade to AI Pro.

The change limits choice among three models: Gemini 3.8 Flash, Gemini 3.5 Flash‑Lite and Gemini 3.1 Pro. Flash is a general‑purpose model for tasks such as answering questions, summarizing files, generating images and chatting. Flash‑Lite is fast but less capable, suited for repetitive tasks but weak in deep knowledge and reasoning. Pro is the most powerful, excelling at math, logic and coding. Free users normally see Flash‑Lite as the default because access to the other two models is restricted.

While Flash‑Lite can handle everyday tasks, it struggles with complex problems, which may frustrate many free users. The only way to change the limits is to switch subscription plans each month. The article was provided by Lance Whitney/ZDNet and edited for Japan by 4X.
