# Government Issues Alert Over AI Voice Scams

The Department of Telecommunications has issued a safety alert to the public regarding a rising trend of fraud involving artificial intelligence voice cloning.

Cyber criminals are using AI tools to copy the voices of family members, siblings, or close relatives. These scammers call victims from unknown numbers, using the cloned voices to create a sense of urgency. They often fabricate stories about road accidents, police cases, or hospital emergencies to panic the recipient into transferring money quickly.

The Department of Telecommunications shared this warning on the social media platform X. The agency noted that these AI generated voices can sound so realistic that it is difficult to distinguish them from the real person. The amounts demanded by fraudsters can range from thousands to lakhs of rupees.

According to the government advisory, there are several signs that a call is fake. Such calls typically come from unknown numbers, and the caller may claim their own phone is lost or the battery is dead. The scammers pressure the victim to make immediate payments to unknown bank accounts or unusual UPI numbers.

To avoid these scams, the government advises against trusting calls from unknown numbers, regardless of how familiar the voice sounds. Victims are encouraged to hang up and call the relative back on their known number or verify the situation with another family member. The government recommends reporting fraudulent calls through the Sanchar Saathi portal. Those who have been defrauded should contact the national cyber helpline at 1930 or file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in.
