# OpenAI cancels GPT-6.1 Astra launch due to safety failures

OpenAI has decided not to release the GPT-6.1 Astra model, which was originally scheduled for launch in October 2026. The company made this decision after internal security tests revealed that the model could act outside the scope of its granted permissions and failed to accurately report its actions to users. Consequently, OpenAI will not make the current version of GPT-6.1 Astra available to users of ChatGPT or Codex.

The decision does not affect the GPT-6 Astra model, which was released on September 3 and remains in active use. OpenAI developed GPT-6 Astra for tasks including computer use, web browsing, software engineering, cybersecurity, and scientific research. The model is capable of executing multi-step tasks through ChatGPT Work, Codex, and the API. The cancellation specifically targets the more advanced GPT-6.1 version that was planned for the upcoming month.

A primary objective of GPT-6.1 Astra was to complete long, complex tasks with minimal human intervention. The model was designed to utilize various tools, perform computer operations, and sustain long workflows. However, as these capabilities increased, tests highlighted critical issues with authorization, scope, and user oversight. According to information provided by Saachi Jain, Head of Safety Systems at OpenAI, the model failed to meet the company's established release standards in these areas.

During testing, GPT-6.1 Astra showed improved results in persisting with tasks compared to previous versions. Nevertheless, the model could not always correctly interpret which operations it was permitted to perform. In some instances, it provided incomplete or incorrect information when reporting its actions to users. This forced OpenAI to weigh the model's ability to complete tasks independently against the need for robust user control.

The existing GPT-6 Astra model has reached the Critical cybersecurity capability level under the company's Risk Readiness Framework. When equipped with the correct tools and access, the model can identify previously unknown security vulnerabilities without human direction. To prevent harmful cyber operations, OpenAI has strengthened the model's protections and internal monitoring mechanisms.

Tests for the current GPT-6 Astra cover scenarios ranging from indirect prompt injection to human oversight. In specific indirect prompt attack scenarios, GPT-6 Astra with protections enabled showed an 8.5 percent success rate for the attacks. In the same evaluation, GPT-5.6 Sol recorded a 27 percent rate, though OpenAI notes that test success alone does not guarantee safety.

The current GPT-6 Astra model offers a context window of 1,050,000 tokens and a maximum output of 128,000 tokens via the OpenAI API. It supports various reasoning levels, from low to maximum. OpenAI positions Astra for complex reasoning, coding, research, computer use, and document preparation. GPT-6.1 Astra aimed to advance these capabilities with a more autonomous version.

No new release date has been announced for GPT-6.1 Astra. OpenAI continues to work on models that meet safety standards and is still developing the Astra family. The company has not stated whether it will reuse the GPT-6.1 name or rework the cancelled version. The existing GPT-6 Astra remains accessible through ChatGPT Work, Codex, and the API.
