# Software Developer Creates AI Dashcam to Detect and Report Roadside Litter

Robin Bennett, who manages a software company, has developed an artificial intelligence tool called Roadside Litter that uses a smartphone to monitor and report trash on roads.

The application is operated via a phone fixed to a vehicle dashboard. The software automatically takes a photo every 10 seconds, analyzes the image to detect litter on the shoulder, classifies the findings, and uploads the results to a platform. To avoid distracting the driver, the screen turns off after approximately one minute.

Bennett created the tool after feeling depressed by the amount of waste on roads and wanting to determine if the issue was local or nationwide. The application was developed following a conversation with the campaign group Clean Up Britain to determine how he could help.

The system has already recorded more than 3,000 reports in Shropshire and over 28,000 reports across the United Kingdom. The data is provided by drivers and is updated as the app is used. The software scores the litter based on reports from different drivers, roads, and days to allow for comparison and summation.

Bennett noted that litter is particularly common near fast food outlets, small convenience stores, and road service areas. He attributes this to people throwing bags out of car windows. He shares this data with Clean Up Britain to encourage authorities to take action.

The Shropshire Council stated that it recognizes the importance of keeping roads attractive and clean. A spokesperson for the organization admitted to contacting National Highways, the government public company responsible for managing the road network, to discuss ways to improve litter management on the A49 and A5, which are two of the busiest roads in the county.
