The National Education Council (CNE) has unanimously approved guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in Brazilian education. This decision was formalized on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, in the Official Gazette of the Union. The implementation of these rules depends on the approval of the Minister of Education, Leonardo Osvaldo Barchini Rosa.

The guidelines provide direction for schools, universities, teachers, and students on the use of AI in the educational environment. The document treats the technology as a support tool for teaching and learning, while maintaining human participation as a central element of the process. It covers both basic education and higher education.

In addition, the document establishes responsibilities related to the responsible use of the technology and the adoption of AI tools by educational institutions. The full text is available for public consultation on the official CNE page.

The committee responsible for drafting the guidelines was chaired by Monica Sapucaia Machado, with rapporteurs Celso Niskier and Israel Matos Batista voting in favor of the proposal. Other council members were also involved in the process. The practical effectiveness of the document will only occur after the publication of the homologation act by the ministry.
