The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested an employee of OpenAI suspected of installing a sophisticated listening device at one of the company's headquarters. The arrest was confirmed by the company on Tuesday, October 13.
The information was reported by Reuters. According to OpenAI, the company's own internal artificial intelligence (AI) models were used to identify the individual responsible for the device and trace its origin. The company communicated the case through a post on X.
OpenAI stated that there are no indications that the employee accessed or improperly extracted weights from models, source code, or customer data. "At this moment, we do not have indications that this individual accessed or improperly extracted weights from models, source code, or customer data. The employee was terminated," the company said.
Use of AI in internal investigation
The OpenAI security program is designed to protect against a wide range of threat agents, including internal risks, cybercriminals, and foreign nations. The company claims that the case illustrates how AI can help address sophisticated security threats.
After identifying the employee internally, OpenAI referred the case to the FBI, which continues its investigation.
Incident amid scrutiny of the company
This case adds to a period of heightened attention regarding security incidents involving OpenAI's AI systems. Earlier in October, Reuters and other outlets reported that the company had informed investors of an annualized revenue of nearly $50 billion for the month of September, a figure lower than previously indicated by the company.
