Microsoft has utilized artificial intelligence to scan security vulnerabilities, resulting in a sharp increase in its software updates. During the routine Patch Tuesday update in October 2026, the technology giant set a new historical record by patching 1,413 vulnerabilities (CVE record) within just one month.
This drastic increase follows Microsoft's use of large language models to automatically identify coding weaknesses in its product lineup. The AI-driven bug hunting initiative significantly raised the number of findings compared to previous months. Among the 1,413 vulnerabilities patched in October 2026, the Windows operating system had the highest number of fixes.
Microsoft highlighted three critical zero-day vulnerabilities among the thousands of patches, with one of them reportedly already being exploited by cybercriminals in the wild. The flood of updates overwhelmed IT teams across various companies. To assist system administrators in prioritizing the most urgent fixes, Microsoft introduced an experimental method called risk cohorts, which groups vulnerabilities with similar risk characteristics.
Alongside this Patch Tuesday release, Microsoft issued an important warning regarding the lifespan of its operating systems. Starting next month (November 2026), Windows 11 version 24H2 and Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016 will officially lose support and will no longer receive monthly security updates. Users are urged to update their operating system versions promptly.
