Perplexity Computer has announced that its SPACE sandbox is now open source, making it available to all users. This personal AI agent has been one of the first to enter the market, operating in an isolated processing environment with access to a real file system, a real browser, and real tools.

Until July, Perplexity utilized the sandbox of an external provider, although the name of that provider is not known. For approximately three months, it has been using SPACE (Sandboxed Platform for Agentic Code Execution), a more robust solution developed in-house. Based on September results, none of the AI models tested escaped from the sandbox using techniques similar to those employed by OpenAI agents to attack Hugging Face.

With SPACE now open source, developers can create isolated environments for AI agents. The source code has been published on GitHub, allowing agents to access files and tools necessary for various tasks without the risk of going online. Developers can understand how SPACE operates and adapt it to their needs, rather than recreating the underlying infrastructure.

Each SPACE sandbox runs within a small virtual machine that has its own operating system, creating an isolation boundary between the agent's work and the host system. A central control plan coordinates the creation, suspension, resumption, or removal of such workspaces.

Several companies are already using SPACE. Akamai has launched SPACE on its cloud platform and collaborates with Perplexity to offer it to its customers. Crusoe has started a collaboration with Perplexity to integrate SPACE into its portfolio of managed AI services. CoreWeave has published a setup guide for developers wishing to implement SPACE on CKS.

Developers can refer to the setup instructions and security guidelines for SPACE to implement it in their agent-based systems. The repository and documentation outline the supported configurations and included components.
