A GitHub-hosted project called tv-vibehack uses AI assistants to strip ads, telemetry, and bloatware from Android TV and Google TV devices, restoring speed and a clean interface in roughly ten minutes.
The method relies on ADB, the Android debug bridge, after enabling USB debugging in developer options. Once the TV authorizes a computer on the same network, an AI assistant runs a prompt that backs up installed apps, disables sponsored recommendations, telemetry, and preinstalled packages, then compiles a lightweight 1.6 MB custom launcher designed for devices with 1 GB of RAM.
The approach works across brands including Philips, Xiaomi, Sony, TCL, and Nvidia Shield, though Samsung, LG, and Amazon Fire TV remain unsupported. The project is released under the MIT license and has surpassed 1,000 stars on GitHub.
A developer known as Gathin demonstrated the technique on a Xiaomi Mi TV 4A, disabling 25 Xiaomi packages and replacing the launcher, with the post reaching 2.3 million views. The same process was replicated on a 2021 Philips UHD running Android TV 11 using Grok 4.7 from xAI.
No apps are uninstalled, and a restoration script can revert all changes in one command. Users are advised to re-enable firmware updates manually afterward and to disable USB debugging once the work is complete for security reasons.
Google has included sponsored content on Android TV since 2019, and Google TV later added autoplaying trailers and banners even in apps-only mode. The tv-vibehack project removes these elements, along with demo mode and Alexa integration on compatible devices.
Animation scales in developer options can also be set to 0.5x for smoother navigation, giving the interface a minimalist look similar to tvOS. Despite the improvements, some video decoder crashes were reported and required a simple TV restart to resolve.
