Anthropic has reported a net loss of over 80 billion USD for the first half of the year, according to a media report citing a draft IPO prospectus. The company indicated it may invest up to 750 billion USD in the coming years to acquire additional computing power.

This loss marks a significant increase from a net loss of 13 billion USD during the same period last year, primarily due to 72 billion USD in accounting charges related to the value changes of financial instruments issued by Anthropic for fundraising.

These figures highlight the high costs associated with the artificial intelligence race, while investors are becoming increasingly cautious in evaluating whether the substantial investments in chips and data centers will yield corresponding returns.

In the first half of this year, Anthropic's revenue surged from 1.1 billion USD in the previous year to 16.3 billion USD, while its spending on AI infrastructure nearly quadrupled to almost 9 billion USD.

The company has benefitted significantly from the widespread application of its programming assistant, "Claude Code," which developers use to write software and build applications.

However, several insiders have revealed that after attending Anthropic's investor day last week, some existing and potential investors are reconsidering their valuations of the AI company based on the latest disclosed financial information.

Three insiders noted that investors attending the event in San Francisco discussed a valuation of approximately 15 trillion USD, a significant reduction from the previously expected market valuation of about 20 trillion USD for the company's shares sale in November.

During the meeting, Anthropic disclosed to investors that its third-quarter revenue increased by 45% compared to the previous quarter, reaching 16.8 billion USD; additionally, the company reported profitability on an adjusted basis for that quarter.

If Anthropic's IPO receives a lukewarm response, it could negatively impact the entire AI market. With competitors like OpenAI potentially going public next year, investors generally believe that the recent outlook for the AI market largely depends on the success of Anthropic's share sale.
