CRH released by myelin precursor cells regulates timing of brain myelin repair after injury
Researchers discovered that oligodendrocyte progenitor cells produce the stress hormone CRH near damaged brain tissue, and this signal controls the timing of myelin repair cell maturation.
The CRH timing mechanism determines whether enough mature oligodendrocytes are produced to restore damaged myelin. The same system also shapes myelination during normal brain development, suggesting a pathway through which early-life stress could affect brain wiring and contribute to psychiatric disorders.

About one third of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells activate CRH production within hours of brain injury, shutting down after roughly three days.
CRH acts through receptor CRHR1 on a separate OPC population to regulate maturation timing; without CRHR1, fewer mature oligodendrocytes are ultimately produced despite faster initial proliferation.
