Amazon removes Prime subscription requirement for Alexa+ on Fire TV devices in the US

Amazon has removed the Prime subscription requirement for Alexa+ on Fire TV devices in the US, making its AI assistant free for all eligible users. This move eliminates a key cost barrier, as the service previously required either a $20 monthly fee or an active Prime membership. The change applies to current-generation Fire TV Sticks, Fire TV Cube, Amazon Ember smart TVs, and third-party TVs with Alexa+ built in, such as Hisense and Panasonic models. While the expansion is currently limited to the US, Amazon has signaled plans to extend free access to more devices and regions in the future.

The shift to free access aligns with Amazon’s broader strategy to drive adoption of Alexa+’s natural language capabilities. Unlike the original Alexa, which relied on rigid voice commands, Alexa+ interprets conversational queries, allowing users to refine requests dynamically, such as asking for recommendations or context about content. This functionality extends to smart home control, enabling users to pull up camera feeds or lock doors via voice.
