AMD submits patch series to add UALink support to Linux kernel

AMD engineers released two patch series on Friday to add UALink infrastructure support to the Linux kernel via the AMDGPU maintainer.

AMD posted two patch series to add UALink support to the Linux kernel. The patches were submitted by AMDGPU maintainer Alex Deucher. They arrived on the kernel mailing list on a Friday afternoon. The series introduce UALink infrastructure code into the kernel tree.
To use the new UALink support, system builders must apply the patches to their kernel source. This requires rebuilding the kernel and installing the resulting image. Testing is needed to verify that UALink devices are detected and function correctly. Until the patches are merged upstream, maintaining a custom kernel adds maintenance overhead.
The UALink code will only be active on systems that have UALink-capable hardware attached. On systems without such hardware, the patches have no effect but add UALink code to the kernel. If the upstream community requests changes, the patch series may need revision before acceptance. Consequently, the feature may remain unavailable in mainline kernels until the patches are accepted.
