Anthropic merged the previously separate memory systems for Claude chat and Claude Cowork into a single shared memory. Context accumulated over months of chat conversations is now available when handing tasks to Cowork, and what comes up in Cowork carries back to chat. This means existing chat history, not just new conversations, is accessible to Cowork going forward.
The memory mechanism also changed operationally. Previously, Claude summarized conversations after they ended to update memory; now topics are added to memory dynamically as you chat, without requiring an explicit instruction to remember something. Users can pause or reset memory at any time, which clears what Claude retains across both products.
Claude Code is notably absent from this merger. Anthropic made no mention of Claude Code in the announcement and, when asked, said the update is focused on Claude Cowork and chat. This leaves a gap for engineers who use Claude Code alongside the other two products, as context from Code sessions does not appear to flow into the shared memory.
Anthropic applies default exclusions for sensitive topics, including health, race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, politics, and gender identity. Users can grant permission for Claude to store specific sensitive topics, such as a dietary allergy, and when they do, Claude displays a notice indicating the information is being recorded. The tradeoff is that persistent memory across products increases convenience but also expands the surface of personal data Claude retains.
