Apple's new Reference Image feature on the iPhone 18 Pro uses a new camera sensor to cryptographically sign photos at the point of capture, producing an unalterable reference image that can be compared against edited versions to detect AI manipulation.
This is one of the first hardware-rooted approaches to content authenticity, shifting provenance verification from post-capture metadata standards into the capture device itself. Developers gain an API across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS to inspect these signed images in third-party apps, though the feature will not launch in the EU.
