Morphotonics raises €40M to expand into data center optical components

Morphotonics has successfully raised €40 million, which will primarily be used to expand its production capabilities and venture into the data center market. This expansion follows a significant increase in demand for smart glasses and other optical components, driven by advancements in AR technology.

The company’s current technology is focused on nanoimprint lithography, which has applications in creating waveguides for displays. With this funding, Morphotonics is preparing to produce optical components for data centers, particularly for Photonic Integrated Circuits, which are essential for efficient data transfer.

While the company has not yet shipped machines for the data center segment, the positive validation from potential customers indicates a readiness to meet this new demand. However, the success of this expansion hinges on market acceptance and the ability to scale production effectively.

Currently, Morphotonics generates most of its revenue from hardware sales, but it also plans to increase its service revenue as more systems are deployed. The ability to deliver a combination of hardware and process licensing is a strategic move that could enhance customer satisfaction and retention.

The development of a new machine capable of producing millions of waveguides per year signifies Morphotonics' commitment to meeting the growing needs of the display market.
