Rubin Observatory's first LSST Camera release: 500k galaxies in the COSMOS field
Rubin Observatory released its first LSST Camera image and data catalog, capturing over 500,000 galaxies in the well-studied COSMOS field as part of its Early Data Preview 2 release.
This is the first public data release from the 3.2-gigapixel LSST Camera, giving researchers and tool builders real data to validate pipelines before the decade-long LSST survey begins in earnest. EDP2 combines observations from April 2025 through January 2026 into a stacked image covering 3,000 square degrees, roughly one-sixth of the visible Southern Hemisphere sky.
The COSMOS field was chosen because its extensive prior observation history across wavelengths makes it a reference standard for validating new data products and comparing measurements across observatories.
Rubin will revisit COSMOS more frequently than most survey regions, enabling detection of transient and variable objects like supernovae over time rather than just static imaging.
