Finnish study links habitual coffee intake to lower visceral fat and sex-specific hormone changes in 2,264 adults
A University of Oulu observational study of 2,264 participants aged 46 found that higher habitual coffee consumption correlated with lower visceral fat, greater skeletal muscle mass, and distinct sex-hormone patterns differing between men and women.
The findings suggest hormonal pathways may partly explain previously observed links between coffee and reduced cardiometabolic risk, but the observational design cannot establish causation. Researchers are now investigating causal mechanisms in animal models with the long-term goal of human intervention studies, and further research is needed before any dietary recommendations could follow.
