SwitchBot launches retrofit smart lock with 19 unlock methods for European doors

SwitchBot’s Lock Ultra Max is a retrofit device that mounts on top of existing European lock cylinders. It does not require the homeowner to remove or replace the original lockset, which lowers the up-front cost and installation complexity. The motor is specified to fit 99 percent of European profiles, including less common variants via optional adapters. This approach contrasts with most smart locks that require a full lockset swap, making the Ultra Max attractive for rental properties or heritage buildings where structural changes are restricted.

The lock offers 19 distinct authentication methods, ranging from traditional passcodes and NFC cards to biometric scans (fingerprint, facial, palm-vein) and digital triggers (voice, smartwatch, app widgets). Each method adds a new entry vector, increasing convenience for multi-user households but also expanding the attack surface. Engineers integrating the lock into smart-home platforms must now manage multiple credential stores, revocation lists, and audit logs, increasing the operational overhead of securing physical access.

The €339.99 bundle includes the Lock Ultra Max, Keypad Vision Pro, and a Matter-compatible Hub Mini. The motor delivers 9 kg of turning force at 160 rpm, a 3.2× speed increase over the previous model. While the higher torque and speed improve reliability on stiff or misaligned doors, the retrofit design still relies on the mechanical strength of the original lockset. If the underlying cylinder or latch fails, the smart lock cannot compensate, limiting its use in high-security or high-traffic environments where the original hardware may not be rated for frequent actuation.
