Switzerland's federal government has launched a CHF 9 million pilot to replace Microsoft 365 with the open-source openDesk suite across 3,000 workstations, following a proof-of-concept with 172 employees.
The pilot addresses digital sovereignty concerns including foreign data access under US cloud legislation, single-vendor dependency, and rising proprietary licensing costs. If successful, the migration could extend to all 54,000 federal workstations, and the Swiss military's Cyber Command is already moving faster with a full openDesk replacement targeted for October 2026.
