Google Pixel Tag adds Bluetooth Channel Sounding for more accurate tracking than AirTag
Google announced the Pixel Tag, a $29 Android-exclusive Bluetooth tracker that uses Bluetooth Channel Sounding and UWB to provide more accurate and power-efficient tracking than Apple's AirTag, which relies on Bluetooth Low Energy.
Bluetooth Channel Sounding uses Phase-Based Ranging instead of the older Received Signal Strength Indicator, making distance estimation more stable and resistant to obstruction and interference. For engineers building location-aware Android peripherals, this introduces a tiered tracking stack where Channel Sounding bridges the gap between BLE and the more power-hungry UWB, but adoption is currently limited to premium Pixel phones that support Bluetooth 6.0 with Channel Sounding.
