Comcast adds opt-in Wi-Fi motion detection to Xfinity routers, law-enforcement data access could be allowed
Comcast’s Xfinity Shield now offers an optional Wi-Fi-based motion-detection feature that sends alerts through the app and notes that law-enforcement may request the motion data.
The routers now monitor radio-frequency changes to act as motion sensors, which adds a new software layer that engineers must integrate and maintain. Because the feature can be accessed by law-enforcement under a footnote advisory, it introduces privacy and compliance considerations for both users and service providers.

The motion-detection feature monitors RF signal changes between the Xfinity Gateway and up to three Wi-Fi devices to generate alerts without recording video or identifying individuals.
It is part of the free Xfinity Shield offering, but a footnote advisory states that law-enforcement could access the collected motion data.
Enabling the feature requires a compatible Xfinity Gateway model (e.g., Technicolor TXB7, XB8, XB9, XB10, MXB1, XER10) and an updated Xfinity app.
