Azure API Management Adds Dedicated AI Gateway Tier, Governing Models and MCP Tools
Microsoft released a public preview of a dedicated AI Gateway tier in Azure API Management, organized around models, MCP servers, and tools rather than traditional APIs.
For teams running multi-provider LLM workloads, this consolidates model routing, tool federation, and policy enforcement into one resource living in the customer's own subscription and Entra tenant. The pricing shape (no scale units, roughly one-minute provisioning) and the gateway-scoped runtime access key have direct implications for cost attribution and blast radius that architects need to weigh before standardizing. Whether authority over an agent's output belongs at the gateway or at the orchestration layer above it is left open in the announcement.

The AI Gateway is a new dedicated tier rather than a feature on the existing API Management classic and v2 tiers, which retain their prior AI capabilities.
It fronts Foundry, Bedrock, Vertex AI, and OpenAI behind one endpoint with policy cards replacing XML, while Anthropic is handled through a custom provider with Messages API passthrough.
Tools are federated from three backend sources (remote MCP by URL, OpenAPI, or a SaaS connector covering more than 1,000 apps), and a single runtime access key reaches every model and tool on the gateway.
