Bumble teases a swipe-free future as it doubles down on IRL meetups

Bumble’s latest product, Plans, moves the matchmaking process from a screen-tap to organized, small-group gatherings in local venues. The app lets participants continue their conversations within Bumble’s ecosystem, removing the need for phone numbers and the classic swipe mechanic. Early testing showed positive engagement, prompting the company to double down on this approach for Gen Z users who favor group socializing.

From a development standpoint, the shift requires a new backend workflow that schedules and manages physical events, tracks attendance, and links those events to user profiles. The upcoming swipe-free interaction model will also demand a redesign of the matching algorithm to prioritize richer, deliberate signals rather than speed-based metrics, which may affect data collection and real-time processing pipelines. Engineers will have to balance these new flows with the existing swipe infrastructure to avoid disrupting current users.

Bumble plans to layer AI assistance into the matchmaking engine to surface better-fit connections, but it emphasizes that the platform will not become an entirely AI-driven experience. This means AI components will likely be supplemental, such as recommendation scoring or event relevance, rather than replacing core business logic. Teams will need to integrate model inference services, monitor performance, and ensure that AI outputs respect user privacy, especially given the reduced reliance on phone numbers.

The company’s financials show a decline in revenue and paying customers, framing the new direction as a strategic pivot rather than a simple feature add. Engineering resources will therefore be allocated to both maintain the legacy swipe experience and build out Plans and the future interaction model, effectively increasing short-term development load. Success will hinge on delivering a seamless transition that retains existing users while attracting the target demographic.

The transition is described as gradual, indicating that the swipe interface will remain operational for the foreseeable future. Consequently, any new code paths must coexist with the current system without causing regressions. The new group-meetup and swipe-free features may also have limited applicability for older user segments or markets where in-person events are less feasible, constraining the universal rollout of the new model.
