EON wants to move the data superhighway from ocean fiber to space lasers
Endeavour Optical Networks emerged from stealth with $10.75 million in seed funding to build a constellation of roughly 20 laser-equipped satellites that would provide dedicated high-bandwidth links between continental data centers, targeting an initial throughput of 2.4 terabits per second.
If EON delivers, operators of distributed infrastructure would gain an alternative to undersea fiber on routes where cable installation is costly or impractical, such as France-to-Australia or Africa-to-South America. The technical gap between current laser comm demonstrations at roughly 2.5 Gbps and EON's 2.4 Tbps goal is enormous, so the feasibility of the core proposition remains unproven.
