What the cluster adds up to.
The device consists of two transparent grids spaced a few millimetres apart. When back-lit and viewed from a distance, the overlapping lines produce a bright bar that moves laterally as the observer shifts position. This bar acts as a visual cue, indicating whether the vessel is left or right of the intended track. The effect is purely geometric, requiring no power beyond the light source and no calibration beyond initial alignment of the grids.
Cost is minimal: a laser cutter, acrylic sheet, and a light source are the only materials. Assembly time is under an hour. The published design uses a 1.65 pitch-to-band ratio, which the author found optimal for visibility. However, the system only provides a binary on/off-track signal; it cannot indicate how far off course the vessel is or whether it is still within a safe zone.
Field-of-view is limited by the grid spacing and separation. At close range, circular distortion appears; at long range, the bar becomes faint. The author notes that a three-lamp system, top light centred between two lower lights, gives pilots a wider margin of error, reducing fuel use and collision risk. The Moire pattern is therefore better suited to marking submarine cables or other linear hazards where deviation tolerance is near zero.
