Mabox Linux 26.08 adds tools for custom ISO creation and persistent USB drives

Mabox Linux 26.08 introduces two utilities that automate the creation of custom installation media. The `mabox-snapshot` tool captures the current system state, including installed packages and configurations, and outputs a bootable ISO. This eliminates the need to manually rebuild a system from a stock image when deploying custom setups. The `mabox-persistence-usb` tool extends this by enabling USB drives to retain changes across reboots, addressing a long-standing limitation of live environments.

These tools target engineers who need reproducible Linux environments for testing, development, or field deployments. The snapshot utility is particularly useful for preserving a known-good state, while persistence allows portable setups to evolve without losing data. However, both tools are specific to Mabox and its Openbox-based workflow, limiting their applicability to other distributions or desktop environments.

The update also modernizes the terminal experience by replacing the F12 drop-down terminal with Kitty, which supports drag-and-drop file operations. The inclusion of the Yazi file manager provides a faster, terminal-based alternative to graphical file browsers. These changes improve usability for power users but may require adjustment for those accustomed to the previous terminal setup.

For new installations, Mabox 26.08 offers a choice between two LTS kernels, allowing users to balance stability and hardware support. The live environment also provides an option to load proprietary drivers during startup, simplifying hardware compatibility. These additions reduce friction for first-time users but do not fundamentally alter the distribution’s lightweight, Openbox-centric design.
