Slack has a new channel type — but only agents can create one

Slack launched a new channel type called Slack Code that can be created exclusively by agents. The channel is described as being built for coding agents and developers. This represents a change in how Slack channels can be provisioned, adding a restriction based on the creator’s identity.

Adopting Slack Code requires teams to verify that their agents have the necessary permissions to create channels. If agents lack those permissions, the channel creation process will fail, potentially delaying workflows that depend on this channel type. Teams may need to adjust their internal processes to delegate channel creation to agents.

The restriction means that human users cannot directly create Slack Code channels, so any reliance on this channel type becomes contingent on agent availability and correct configuration. Additionally, because the channel type is marketed for coding agents, its utility for non-coding or general-purpose communication is limited.

By separating agent-created channels from user-created ones, Slack may improve clarity for agent-specific interactions but could introduce overhead for teams that must manage agent roles and permissions to enable the new functionality.
