ChatGPT for Mac adds Apple Messages integration to read, search, and send chats

ChatGPT’s new Apple Messages integration lets the macOS desktop app interact with conversations stored in Apple’s Messages app. This includes reading message history, searching for specific content, and preparing or sending new messages. The feature supports iMessage, SMS, and RCS, covering most modern messaging protocols. However, it does not enable remote interaction with ChatGPT through Messages, meaning users cannot trigger ChatGPT actions from their iPhone or other devices.

The integration requires explicit user approval for each message sent, a default setting OpenAI emphasizes to mitigate privacy risks. Users can grant persistent approval, but OpenAI’s plugin guide warns of potential risks and provides steps to revoke access. A known issue exists where certain tasks may disable approval prompts, which could lead to unintended message sends. Engineers should evaluate these workflows before integrating the feature into automated systems.

The feature is limited to Apple silicon Macs, excluding Intel-based machines. This hardware restriction may impact adoption in environments where older Macs are still in use. The integration is available across all ChatGPT plans, including ChatGPT Work and Codex, but does not extend to regular ChatGPT chats. This suggests OpenAI is targeting professional and enterprise use cases where message automation or analysis could streamline workflows.

Beyond the Messages integration, the update includes other improvements like pinned chat syncing between macOS and iOS, shared read-only snapshots of Codex threads, and co-editing for ChatGPT-hosted Sites. These additions indicate OpenAI is expanding collaboration features, though the Messages plugin remains the most notable change for Mac users.
